Supermarket & Space is going to Vienna!
After successful editions to Copenhagen, Dublin, Innsbruck, Reykjavik, Birmingham, Barcelona and Milan, it is now Vienna’s turn. This city will be the destination of Supermarket & Space’s annual study tour from April 9 to April 11, 2025. Three days full of inspiration, new insights and new encounters and all in a relaxed atmosphere in a beautiful city.
Below we present the program of the study tour in parts.
Supermarkets
We get a comprehensive tour of Interspar Am Schottentor in the center of Vienna. This Interspar is located in an old bank building and can be counted as one of the finest supermarkets in Europe. We will check out supermarket Billa on Michaelerplatz. Billa is part of the German REWE International Group and distinguishes itself with a unique food service offering. We also visit Billa Corso (more department store than supermarket but with high-quality food retail and foodservice spread over several floors. And then there is Billa Pflanzilla. This is a 100% vegan supermarket in Mariahilfer Strasse. ‘Must see’ is Julius Meinl am Graben. This ‘high end’ delicatessen is much more than a supermarket. Product presence and store image are of an exceptionally high level.
Area development ‘Seestadt’
Seestadt is one of the largest new construction projects in Europe, with an area of 240 hectares, comparable in size to the inner city of Vienna. Five years after the completion of the first homes, some seven thousand people now live on the site where an airport stood for decades. An occasional coalition between the City of Vienna and a public-private area developer (Wien3420) wants to turn Seestadt into a new center for the region, including room for urban growth. For Vienna, with a population of some 1.9 million and as the fastest growing city in Europe, this is much needed to provide housing for the nearly 290 thousand residents the city expects to accommodate by 2048. Seestadt is a unique area development and offers much inspiration on several fronts.
We visit Seestadt with a tour and explanation by concerned stakeholders with specific focus on housing and amenities, including two supermarkets now located in Seestadt, namely Spar and Billa.
Culture
The program of the study tour will set aside time to visit the historic National Library of Austria and the Spanish Riding School (riding school) right in the center of the city.
The group will consist of 20 people. By plane we will travel from Schiphol Airport to Vienna. By train can also be arranged if desired. For transportation from airport to hotel and vice versa we will use a transfer. We will stay in a good hotel (4 stars) in the center of Vienna. Participation fee includes airfare, transfers, 2 hotel nights, 2 joint dinners and one joint lunch and drinks. Costs for this study tour are € 1,595.- per person (excl. VAT).
